Trump says both sides to blame amid Charlottesville backlash

President Donald Trump, in a staggering, impromptu news conference in New York on Tuesday, blamed the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend on both sides of the conflict -- equating the white supremacists on one side with the "alt-left" on the other side -- after his top White House aides spent days trying to clean up after Trump's initial vague response to the violence.

The news conference laid bare his unvarnished view of who was to blame for the violence and what he thinks about the nationwide effort to remove statues of Confederate leaders. Trump's comments were the latest in what has been a jaw-dropping saga ever since the President made his first vague statement on the violence, blaming the conflicts on "many sides." The comments also made clear that Trump's speech on Monday -- which vociferously blamed the violence on the "alt-right" and neo-Nazi groups who initiated the protest -- was largely a sterilized version of his view.
"I think there is blame on both sides," Trump said during a contentious back-and-forth with reporters in the lobby of his Midtown Manhattan building.

"What about the 'alt-left' that came charging at, as you say, the 'alt-right,' do they have any semblance of guilt?" Trump asked. "What about the fact they came charging with clubs in hands, swinging clubs, do they have any problem? I think they do."
He added: "You had a group on one side that was bad and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent. nobody wants to say it, but I will say it right now."
'Many sides'
On Saturday, as violence in Charlottesville played out on national television, Trump blamed "many sides" for the conflict. Though that answer was quickly panned by Democrats and Republicans alike, Trump remained silent on Sunday, leaving it to his aides to try to clean up his vague answer. Trump, after mounting pressure that was palpable inside the White House, spoke Monday and condemned the white supremacists and neo-Nazis at the heart of the violence.
On Tuesday, though, Trump defended his 48-hour delay in denouncing white supremacists, arguing that he took his time because he didn't know the facts.

"I wanted to make sure, unlike most politicians, that what I said was correct, not make a quick statement," Trump said, calling his initial comment a "fine statement."
He added: "I don't want to go quickly and just make a statement for the sake of making a political statement."
The President subsequently called the driver of the car that drove through a crowd, killing one woman, a "murderer" then once again blamed both sides for the violence.
CNN Money: Trump says CEOs who quit his council are 'grandstanders'
"You can call it terrorism, you can call it murder. You can call it whatever you want," he said. "The driver of the car is a murderer and what he did was a horrible, horrible, inexcusable thing."
"I didn't wait long. I didn't wait long. I wanted to make sure, unlike most politicians, that what I said was correct, not make a quick statement," Trump said Tuesday. "The statement I made on Saturday, the first statement, was a fine statement, but you don't make statements that direct until you know the facts. It takes a little while to get the facts. You still don't know the facts and it is a very, very important process to me. It is a very important statement."
A senior White House official says chief of staff John Kelly and other top advisers hoped the President would turn a corner Tuesday and talk about infrastructure, but concedes they were entirely wrong.
"That was all him -- this wasn't our plan," the official said, speaking confidentially about internal deliberations.
The President has been fuming in closed-door meetings about what he sees as unfair coverage and those feelings played out on Tuesday.
Same aides gleefully watched as Trump slammed the "fake news," but Kelly stood off to the side as Trump spoke, his face stern and his arms crossed.
Removing Confederate statues
Trump also warned against nationwide attempts to remove statues to Confederate leaders, arguing that attempts to remove the statue of Robert E. Lee could lead to attempts to remove monuments honoring former Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
"You are changing history, you are changing culture" by taking down statues to past leaders, he said.
Trump said there were some "very bad people" on both sides, but that there was some who came out to protest the removal of Robert E. Lee's statue who were "fine people."

President Donald Trump on Steve Bannon's future: 'We'll see'
"You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down, to them, of a very, very important statue and a renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name," Trump said.
Pressed by reporters, Trump raised Washington and Jefferson, arguing there could be a slippery slope.
"George Washington was a slave owner. So will George Washington lose his status? Are we going to take down statues to George Washington?" he said. "How about Thomas Jefferson, what do you think of Thomas Jefferson, do you like him? OK good. Are we going to take down the statues, because he was a major slave owner? Now are we going to take down his statue?"
He added: "You know, you really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?"
Trump's slippery slope argument is straight out of the 'alt-right' playbook.
Corey Stewart, an 'alt-right' leader and the former Republican gubernatorial candidate turned Senate candidate in Virginia, tweeted in response to Trump on Tuesday, "They won't stop until all of American history is erased."
Touts winery in Virginia
After leaving the podium, Trump was asked whether he planned to go to Charlottesville. His response, "Does anyone know I own a house in Charlottesville?"
Trump was referring to his winery in the city.
"I mean I know a lot about Charlottesville," he said. "Charlottesville is a great place that has been very badly hurt over the last couple of days."
He added: "I own actually one of the largest wineries in the United States, it is in Charlottesville."

Mueller, who had an expert calculate his loss of up to $US3 million in future earnings, told GMA he had filed the lawsuit against Swift two years ago not for financial gain but to procure a note from her to help his applications at future jobs.

"I asked for something in writing which stated that there was a misunderstanding. And I can take that and possibly convince someone at a radio station to hire me," Mueller said.

Mueller said he may file an appeal.

After the verdict, Swift released a statement saying she hoped to "help those whose voices should also be heard" and would make donations to organisations that help sexual assault victims defend themselves. She has not spoken publicly since.

Swift received support from stars including singer Kesha, who has been involved in three-year legal battle against a music producer she accused of rape and emotional abuse.

Kesha tweeted that she supported Swift and admired her "strength and fearlessness."

MoviePass is making waves this week after announcing a $10-a-month theater subscription service.

With MoviePass, filmgoers can see a movie a day (excluding Imax and 3D screens) for $9.95 a month, and MoviePass will pay theaters the full price of the ticket.

The $9.95 price point is guaranteed for at least 12 months, though space is limited, according to a blog post on MoviePass.

On the surface, it looks worth it. The average movie-ticket price in the U.S. was $8.65 in 2016, according to data from Statista, making a monthly MoviePass just slightly more than the cost of one traditional ticket.

And in some cities, the price of a monthly MoviePass is even less than the cost of a ticket. A standard adult ticket at the AMC theater in Emeryville, a suburb of San Francisco, is nearly twice that at $14.19. In New York City, it’s $15.19.

so, uh, Moviepass, which I currently pay $50/mo for (and they tried to charge $100/mo) is now going to be $9.99?! https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-08-15/netflix-co-founder-s-crazy-plan-pay-10-a-month-go-to-the-movies-all-you-want …
But it may not be as sweet of a deal in every city. An average AMC movie ticket in Fargo, N.D., is just $7.69, meaning you’ll have to go at least twice a month to make MoviePass worth it. And AMC Entertainment AMC, -2.57%   this month is offering a $5 ticket deal on Tuesdays, while Regal Entertainment Group RGC, -1.24%   offers discounted tickets on certain days that vary by theater. For example, at the Regal theater in O’Fallon, Mo., tickets are $5 all day Sunday through Thursday.

Since launching Tuesday, the MoviePass deal has been wildly popular among fans, even causing the site to crash at various points during the day.

Here’s everything you need to know about the movie-ticket deal, whether it’s actually worth it and whether it’s too good to be true:

How does it work?

Members are sent a debit card when they sign up for the service, and they also need to download the MoviePass app to their smartphone. To see a movie, members must check in on the app when they are within 100 yards of the theater. They then need to select the movie and preferred showtime via the app. Once checked in, the MoviePass debit card is automatically loaded with the exact price of a movie ticket, which they can then use like any debit card to purchase a ticket at the counter.

How many movies can you see?

Merck, Under Armour, Intel CEOs Resign From Trump Panel
The CEOs of athletic wear manufacturer Under Armour, computer chip maker Intel and pharmaceutical company Merck resigned from the White House's American Manufacturing Council — with the Merck withdrawal drawing a quick and angry Twitter outburst from President Trump. Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier cited the president's failure to explicitly rebuke the white nationalists who marched in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend. He wrote on Twitter Monday that "America's leaders must honor our fundamental values by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry and group supremacy, which runs counter to the American ideal that all people are created equal." Frazier is one of the few African-Americans to head a Fortune 500 company. Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank resigned from the panel, saying his company "engages in innovation and sports, not politics." Plank did not specifically mention Trump or Charlottesville, but said his company will focus on promoting "unity, diversity and inclusion" through sports. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich followed, writing that while he had urged leaders to condemn "white supremacists and their ilk," many in Washington "seem more concerned with attacking anyone who disagrees with them."
As North Korea Holds Onto Launch Plans, South Korea Pushes for Diplomacy
North Korea's military presented leader Kim Jong Un with plans to launch missiles into waters near Guam and "wring the windpipes of the Yankees," even as both Koreas and the United States signaled their willingness to avert a deepening crisis, with each suggesting a path toward negotiations. The tentative interest in diplomacy follows unusually combative threats between President Trump and North Korea amid worries that Pyongyang is nearing its long-sought goal of accurately being able to send a nuclear missile to the U.S. mainland. Next week's start of U.S.-South Korean military exercises that enrage the North each year make it unclear, however, if diplomacy will prevail. Kim appeared in photos sitting at a table with a large map marked by a straight line between what appeared to be northeastern North Korea and Guam, and passing over Japan — apparently showing the missiles' flight route.
5 Die After Being Fitted With Balloons for Obesity, FDA Says
At least five people have died after receiving gastric balloons to help them lose weight, the Food and Drug Administration said. It’s unclear whether the balloons or the surgery to implant them could have caused the deaths, but the FDA issued an alert to doctors to monitor patients who have the devices, according to NBC News. The balloons are intended to treat severe obesity by reducing how much a person can eat by filling the stomach, closing off part of the stomach or surgically reducing stomach volume. Two different balloon devices have been involved in reports of the deaths, which came as quickly as a day after surgery: one made by Apollo Endo-Surgery, the other by ReShape. Apollo said the company has sold 180,000 of Orbera balloon devices worldwide.
Apple, Aetna Hold Secret Meetings to Bring Apple Watch to Customers, Sources Say
Apple and Aetna held secret meetings to bring Apple's health- and fitness-tracking device, Apple Watch, to Aetna customers, according to three sources who spoke with CNBC. Aetna, which covers an estimated 23 million people, is negotiating a deal with Apple to either provide the smartwatch for free or at a discounted rate to its members. Recently, Apple has focused on developing new health sensors for people with chronic disease, according to a CNBC report. Apple Watch recently surpassed Fitbit as the top-selling health-tracking device, after shipments reached an estimated 22 million in early 2017.
Jury Sides With Taylor Swift in Lawsuit, Orders Ex-DJ to Pay $1
Taylor Swift won $1 and long-awaited vindication after a jury decided in a civil trial that a radio host groped her during a pre-concert photo op four years ago. After a weeklong trial over dueling lawsuits, jurors determined that fired Denver DJ David Mueller assaulted the pop star by grabbing her backside during a backstage meet-and-greet. Swift hugged her crying mother after the verdict and reiterated how she wanted to stand up for other women. The six-woman, two-man jury also found that Swift's mother and radio liaison were within their rights to contact Mueller's bosses about the groping. Mueller sued the Swifts and their radio handler, Frank Bell, seeking up to $3 million for his ruined career. At the end of the trial, the judge dismissed Taylor Swift from Mueller's lawsuit, saying he failed to prove that she sought to get Mueller fired or had any reason to believe that someone else may have assaulted her. The singer-songwriter said in her countersuit that she wanted a symbolic $1.
Stunt Driver Dies While Filming “Deadpool 2”
A female stunt driver has died after a motorcycle crash on a set for the movie "Deadpool 2" in downtown Vancouver, police said. The driver's name was not immediately released. Witness Sharmina Kermalli said she had just walked into a Starbucks next door to where the accident happened when she heard a loud crash. She ran out of the coffee shop and saw glass still falling on the body of the woman. A crumpled motorcycle was seen lying on its side at the location of the accident near Vancouver's waterfront. Police said officers were at the scene and investigators with WorkSafeBC, the provincial workplace safety agency, were also looking into the crash.

Denver (AP) -- Immediately after a jury determined that Taylor Swift had been groped by a radio station host before a concert in Denver, the singer-songwriter turned to one of her closest allies — her mother — and later said she hoped the verdict would inspire other victims of sexual assault.

Swift hugged her crying mother after the six-woman, two-man jury said in U.S. District Court on Monday that former Denver DJ David Mueller had groped the pop star during a photo op four years ago. Per Swift's request, jurors awarded her $1 in damages — a sum her attorney, Douglas Baldridge, called "a single symbolic dollar, the value of which is immeasurable to all women in this situation."

Swift released a statement thanking her attorneys "for fighting for me and anyone who feels silenced by a sexual assault."

"My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard," she said, promising to make unspecified donations to groups that help victims of sexual assault.

Nancy Leong, a law professor at the University of Denver, said the verdict is important because "we are getting to the point in society that women are believed in court. For many decades and centuries, that was not the case."

Leong, who also teaches in the university's gender studies program, said the verdict will inspire more victims of sexual assault to come forward.

"The fact that she was believed will allow women to understand that they will not automatically be disbelieved, and I think that's a good thing," Leong said.

Swift and her mother initially tried to keep the accusation quiet by reporting the incident to Mueller's bosses and not the police.

But it inevitably became public when Mueller sued Swift for up to $3 million, claiming the allegation cost him his $150,000-a-year job at country station KYGO-FM, where he was a morning host.

"I've been trying to clear my name for four years," he said after the verdict in explaining why he took Swift to court. "Civil court is the only option I had. This is the only way that I could be heard."

Swift countersued for assault and battery, and during an hour of testimony blasted a low-key characterization by Mueller's attorney, Gabriel McFarland, of what happened. While Mueller testified he never grabbed Swift, she insisted she was groped.

"He stayed attached to my bare ass-cheek as I lurched away from him," Swift testified.

"It was a definite grab. A very long grab," she added.

Mueller emphatically denied reaching under the pop star's skirt or otherwise touching her inappropriately, insisting he touched only her ribs and may have brushed the outside of her skirt as they awkwardly posed for the picture.

That photo was virtually the only evidence besides the testimony.

In the image shown to jurors during opening statements but not publicly released, Mueller's hand is behind Swift, just below her waist. Both are smiling. Mueller's then-girlfriend is standing on the other side of Swift.

Swift testified that after she was groped, she numbly told Mueller and his girlfriend, "Thank you for coming," and moved on to photos with others waiting in line because she did not want to disappoint them.

But she said she immediately went to her photographer after the meet-and-greet ended and found the photo of her with Mueller, telling the photographer what happened.

Swift's mother, Andrea Swift, testified that she asked radio liaison Frank Bell to call Mueller's employers. They did not call the police to avoid further traumatizing her daughter, she said.

"We absolutely wanted to keep it private. But we didn't want him to get away with it," Andrea Swift testified.

Bell said he emailed the photo to Robert Call, KYGO's general manager, for use in Call's investigation of Mueller. He said he didn't ask that Mueller be fired but that "appropriate action be taken."

Jurors rejected Mueller's claims that Andrea Swift and Bell cost him his job.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge William Martinez dismissed similar claims against Taylor Swift, ruling Mueller's team failed to offer evidence that the then-23-year-old superstar did anything more than report the incident to her team, including her mother.

MANILA, Philippines – Pantone recently paid tribute to pop icon Prince by unveiling its new custom color, Love Symbol # 2, on August 8.

The new color, now named the official hue for the late singer's brand and estate, is a distinct shade of purple – somewhere between a pastel and a jewel tone, a deep violet hue with a hint of grey.

As Pantone said on their site, it was inspired by the color Prince often wore onstage (earning him the moniker "The Purple One"), his song "Purple Rain," and his custom-made purple Yamaha piano. The color’s curious name is taken from the glyph on the singer’s Love Symbol album.

From beauty products, to clothes, to home accessories, these products get as close to Love Symbol #2 as they can, making your everyday life just a little bit more Princely.

The tech industry is hiring Israeli engineers as fast as the army can produce them

United Airlines started a three-flights-per-week service from San Francisco to Tel Aviv last year. It was so popular that the carrier now runs the route every day, with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
It’s another sign of the insatiable global demand for technology talent, with former Israeli army engineers particularly prized. The world’s tech giants snap them up as fast as the government can train them.

Amazon, for example, is reportedly boosting its presence in Israel by renting 11 floors in a new Tel Aviv tower building. Google has been there for more than a decade, and now Wall Street banks run initiatives across the city. China is pouring in money, on top of Silicon Valley venture capital.

Israel’s unusually high rate of entrepreneurship—it’s not known as “start-up nation” for nothing—is partly attributed to the army, which maintains compulsory service and selects many of the country’s brightest minds for its intelligence division. The army’s elite Talpiot recruits are credited with helping develop missile defense systems, while Unit 8200 produces some of the world’s most formidable cybersecurity experts.
The US has long been a major source of investments in Israel, but now China is getting in the game, too. Chinese suitors spent $11 billion on Israeli acquisitions last year, according to Dealogic, more than was spent on buyouts in Germany, a much larger economy. Many, if not most, Israeli venture capital funds are raising money from Chinese investors.

These days, the country of 8 million people is about 10,000 engineers short of what it needs, according to Guy Naor, chief technology officer at NEX Optimisation, part of London-based NEX Group. The electronic markets and trading technology company, formerly known as ICAP, has 370 employees in Tel Aviv, making it the firm’s third-largest office. NEX’s headcount in Israel recently increased about 10% as part of a cloud and distributed-ledger project.
“There is a worldwide shortage of good developers,’’ said Naor, who was previously a bomb-disposal expert in the Israel Defense Forces.
Tel Aviv is perhaps best known for its cybersecurity and artificial intelligence experts, but more financial technology firms are sprouting up there. Joab Rosenberg headed a group of analysts as a colonel in the IDF. His military experience became the basis for Epistema, which uses software to help financial analysts collaborate. Epistema was part of Citigroup’s startup accelerator, and he credits the New York-based bank with helping boost the fintech ecosystem in Tel Aviv.

Tel Aviv is best known for cybersecurity and AI, but more fintech firms are sprouting up there.

Yoni Assia says he launched his first startup—making rollercoaster videos—before he even left the IDF, where he was a programmer. Now, he’s the CEO of social-trading company eToro, which has operations in Israel. While the shortage of engineers is the most acute in San Francisco, Assia says the crunch is especially pronounced in Tel Aviv—many local companies are now looking to Ukraine to hire workers.
There are about 90 Israeli companies listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange, the most of any non-US nation apart from China. The sheer number of big foreign companies setting up shop in the country may eventually damage the startup sector, though, by snapping up the best engineers, choking off the supply of talent to innovative upstarts, according to Asaf Homossany, senior managing director at Nasdaq.
But in Israel, bigger companies say they don’t always get their way. Large corporations can offer a lot of money to new hires, but they can’t sell the dream of starting something from scratch and making it big—like Intel’s $15 billion acquisition of Jerusalem-based Mobileye.
It’s not uncommon for young developers to jump between big companies before starting their own. That’s not all smooth sailing, of course. While going to work for a startup tech firm sounds romantic, especially when so many others around you are doing it, NEX’s Naor says 99% of them don’t make it. But if there’s one thing you learn in the army, it’s resilience.

Prince fans: calibrate your purples.
The late pop star’s estate has designated a murky shade of purple called “Love Symbol #2” as his official color. Working with color standards company Pantone, the exclusive color is inspired by the purple Yamaha piano which was intended to be the centerpiece of Prince’s tour before he passed away suddenly last April.
Like his trademark glyph called Love Symbol #1—a mash-up of the Mars-male and Venus-female astrological symbols—the new color is meant to brand his work moving forward. Pantone Color Institute’s Laurie Pressman explains that using one color across all media “enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself.” The purple graphics on Prince’s official website, and on the website of his mythic creative sanctuary Paisley Park, have already been adjusted to Love Symbol #2.
Though Prince has cited several color in his hit songs—little red Corvette, raspberry beret, blue light, white mansion, pink cashmere—he had a particular obsession with purple, culminating in his 1984 hit album (and movie) Purple Rain. As he explained in an interview around the time Purple Rain was released, he believed that purple was the color of the Apocalypse:
When there’s blood in the sky: red and blue equals purple… purple rain pertains to the end of the world and being with the one you love and letting your faith/god guide you through the purple rain.
But of all the shades of purple the flamboyant singer has flashed during his career, why this rather somber purple?
In an interview with AP last year, Yamaha’s vice president Chris Gero explained that the precise shade of the Yamaha piano was meant to match a couch in Paisley Park.
“The color purple was specifically chosen by him to match an item in his house, which was actually made of several different colors of purple that made one specific color of purple,” explained Gero, noting that they resorted to using automotive paint when they couldn’t find the exact shade of acrylic paint. Pantone created Love Symbol #2 by color matching paint samples of the piano sent by the estate. Pressman clarifies that the piano’s color looks brighter in press photos because of the lighting.
It’s not the first time Pantone has created a custom color for a person. Color-sophisticates like Jay-Z (Jay Z Blue), real estate company CEO Sherry Chris (Sherry Chris Pink – SC 2011), and the late British fashion designer Richard Nicoll (Nicoll Blue) all have Pantone-formulated colors in their name.

Teen tackled by bystanders after vandalizing Boston holocaust memorial

The New England Holocaust Memorial in downtown Boston was vandalized Monday night by a 17-year-old who was immediately tackled by bystanders and held until police arrived, police said.

The teen hurled a rock through a glass panel etched with numbers, representing those tattooed on the arms of the Jews and others in the concentration camps operated by Nazi Germany, police said. The panels are affixed to six glass towers, each 54 feet high.

It was the second act of vandalism in less than three months at the site, located in Carmen Park near historic Faneuil Hall. The suspect in Monday’s incident was charged with willful destruction of property.
Boston police department’s civil rights unit is investigating whether the act was a hate crime but didn’t shy away from acknowledging the timing of the act and its possible relation to the past weekend’s violence in Charlottesville

“Clearly, this type of behavior will not be tolerated in our city,” Boston police commissioner Williams Evans said in a statement. “And, in light of the recent events and unrest in Charlottesville, it’s sad to see a young person choose to engage in such senseless and shameful behavior.”
Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh took to Twitter to express his disappointment, saying he was saddened to see “such a despicable action in this great city.”
In June, James Isaac, 21, of Roxbury Mass., was accused of shattering a glass panel of the same memorial. Isaac has pleaded not guilty to vandalism charges. The repairs for that incident were finished in July. Later in July, a group of vandals allegedly toppled over six headstones in a historic Jewish cemetery in Melrose, a Boston suburb.

The memorial opened in 1995 and had not been vandalized until June.

Boston’s Jewish Community Relations Council and Combined Jewish Philanthropies expressed disappointment.
“The images of Nazis marching in the streets of America over the weekend in Charlottesville and now shattered glass once again at this sacred space in Boston are an affront to our Jewish community and to all those who stand-up against bigotry, hatred and anti-Semitism,” the statement said.

The memorial reopened Monday night around 9 p.m.

Each tower consists of 22 panels of glass, according to the New England Holocaust Memorial. Visitors often leave stones at the site - "reflecting the ages-old Jewish custom of marking a graveside visit," according to the group. It's not clear if one of those stones was used to vandalize the memorial.

The Boston Police Department's Civil Rights Unit is also investigating the incident to determine if additional charges are pending.
"Today & every day Boston stands up against hate. I'm saddened to see such a despicable action in this great city...Thankful to public and @bostonpolice for quick arrest of the person responsible for vandalizing Holocaust Memorial," Boston Mayor Martin Walsh tweeted Monday.
Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren tweeted: "Let me be clear: These cowardly acts of hate aren't welcome in Boston or anywhere else in this country," in reference to the vandalism.
The memorial was re-dedicated last month after being vandalized in June. A glass panel was also shattered in that incident.

MANILA: The Philippines on Monday suspended the accreditation and operation of Uber for one month, in a decision that followed a government crackdown on unregistered drivers offering app-based ride-hailing services.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) did not give a reason for its decision, which came amid regulatory disputes with Uber and rival Grab that have prompted investigations by both chambers of Philippine Congress.

The LTFRB issued an advisory saying its board has also "strongly recommended" that Uber extend financial assistance to accredited operators while it is under suspension.

The regulator said transport law enforcers have already been furnished copies of its order.

Extending financial assistance will be "an expression of good faith as their accredited peer-operators would not have suffered the current predicament were it not for the predatory actions of respondent Uber," the LTFRB said.

A company spokesman said Uber was "studying the order".

The Southeast Asian nation was the first country to regulate app-based car-hailing operations after drawing up rules in 2015.

Last year the LTFRB suspended the acceptance and processing of applications for all ride-sharing services, including Uber and Grab, to study further how to regulate the industry.

But both Uber and Grab said they continued to accept new drivers amid strong demand for the service, resulting in a surge in the number of unregistered drivers.

NIEUWVEEN, Netherlands: Standing in his rubber boots in his fields surrounded by his beloved Red Holstein cows, Dutch farmer Gerard Hartveld has an air of resignation as he contemplates the future.

Hartveld says he is a dairy farmer in “his heart” and soul. Yet, his heart is heavy knowing that, like many who work the land today in The Netherlands, he has no-one to inherit his family farm.

The figures are staggering. Some 60% of those aged over 55 have no one to whom they can bequeath their land, according to the Dutch central statistics office (CBS).

That means some 15,000 farms could disappear in the next decade, with more than eight out of 10 sheep farmers, who are reaching retirement, having no successors.

Although cattle farmers are faring slightly better, most family farms have witnessed an exodus of the younger generation as they desert the fields and barns in their droves lured by the promise of fortunes to be made in the city.

Hartveld’s farm in central Nieuwveen has been in his family for more than a century – since 1913. He knows every inch of the land as well as his cows, including the doyens of the 20-strong dairy herd, Miranda and Greta.

But with no children, the time will come “in 15 years or so, not before”, when this reserved 52-year-old man of few words will see the land and his herd “pass out of the family” to be taken over by strangers.

Save the sheep

This is where an innovative Dutch scheme seeks to step in, aiming to rescue such farms which make up an integral part of the landscape in the lowlands country.

Thomas Legrand is a 27-year-old Frenchman, who, with his Dutch girlfriend, is looking for a farm to run. But with no contacts in the farming world, the couple are turning to an online service called “Farmer Seeks Farmer.”

”It’s like a dating site,” said Legrand, who “dreams of taking over a small sheep farm on a polder.”

It is the small holdings which have been most affected by the breakdown of the family chain – fertile lands in this agriculture-rich nation which used to be passed down from generation to generation; ancestral courtyards which once echoed with the cries of playing children.

Backed by the Young Farmers’ Association, pig farmer Sander Thus has been working with the online scheme putting those close to retirement in contact with young would-be farmers seeking their own patch of agricultural land.

Like an Internet dating website, users register on the site and wait for their search to throw up a match.

Thus, 28, arranges an initial meeting between the two to see if they click.

The young newcomer then spends a week on the farm so the two sides get to know each other better, before eventually sitting down to business to discuss the terms of any transfer – which can range from a straightforward sale to a tenancy agreement.

Soon, a new announcement will be posted on the “Farmer Seeks Farmer” site by a cereal producer in the southern Limburg province whose three children all moved to the city.

The 61-year-old farmer, who declined to be named and admitted to AFP that he was “tired”, already knows what he’s going to write on his profile.

”Cereal producer in the Limburg province is looking for a serious youngster to take over one hundred hectares of ancestral land, which I don’t want to see fall into corporate hands.”

Return to the land

Today’s young farmers are often those embracing the profession out of passion, a desire to get their hands dirty or simply to escape the hectic pace of life in the city.

”Today, most of those looking to take over a farm are self-employed between the ages of 20 and 40, who don’t come from the farming world at all but have this desire to roll their sleeves up,” said Thus.

Since the scheme was launched in 2011, several dozen farms have moved outside of the original family owners to be taken over by a new generation of farmers.

And Thus hopes the numbers will grow, with 135 people searching for land registered on the site, and some 35 existing farmers looking for new blood to farm their lands.

For dairy farmer Hartveld however, he says with a mixture of pride and sorrow that when the time comes he won’t need the services of “Farmer Seeks Farmer”.

There are already several people from neighbouring villages interested in taking over his farm – and preserving a small piece of Dutch history.

Both Android and iOS feature very useful tools that allow you to quickly locate your smartphone if it gets lost or stolen. Even if you are unable to recover the phone, you can still remotely lock it and wipe all your data.

The first step is to make sure that your device can be located. In Android, go into Google Settings, then Security, and activate the option "Remotely locate this device", if it is not already turned on.

Then you only have to connect to android.com/find with any Internet browser, whether on a computer or mobile device, to access real-time information on the location of your smartphone. Other options allow you to have the phone ring to alert you of its location, or remotely lock it and erase all your information.

Some brands offer their own solutions, like Samsung with its "Find my mobile" function, which allows you to synchronize your smartphone with your Samsung account, and activate remote control and tracking.

In iOS, open "Settings", then iCloud, and activate "Find my iPhone". Then make sure that “Location Services” is turned on in your “Privacy” settings.

Once this is done, in the event that your iPhone is lost or stolen, you can connect to icloud.com/find and sign in to your Apple account to see exactly where your phone is. You can also do this using the "Find My iPhone" app using any other iOS device, once you have signed in with your Apple ID. You can then remotely lock your phone, have it play a sound, display a message, or erase all the data on it.

It goes without saying that these solutions will only work if your smartphone is turned on and connected (via a cellphone network or WiFi). They also work for any other device that is connected to an Apple or Google account.

SHANGHAI: Chinese army officers have a new enemy in their sights – a mobile phone battle game believed so addictive to young soldiers that it may slow them down in real-life combat.

Smartphone smash-hit King of Glory is so popular in China that its maker and Internet giant Tencent last month began limiting daily playing times to "ensure children's healthy development".

Now the Chinese army is taking aim at the multiplayer online battle game.

"There is certainly a security risk that can't be overlooked," the People's Liberation Army Daily newspaper warned gravely.

"The game requires constant attention but a soldier's job is full of uncertainty. Once a soldier is cut off from the game for an urgent mission, he could be absent-minded during the operation if his mind remains on the game."

The newspaper said officers had become worried after noticing that almost all the soldiers in one dormitory were playing the game over a weekend.

The state newspaper did concede that up to a point the game offered respite during leisure time and there are no immediate plans to ban it from barracks.

Nevertheless, the rank and file should be given "scientific guidance", it added.

The game boasts up to 80 million daily users but the Chinese government is increasingly worried about the impact it is having on children and teenagers, who lock themselves away for hours for marathon sessions.

Alibaba and Tencent looking riskier and placing bigger bets

Alibaba and Tencent can count themselves among the world’s costliest technology companies after a stellar run.
To justify those lofty valuations, China’s two largest corporations have to deliver on some of the riskiest bets they’ve placed in years.
Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, which created China’s largest online bazaar but has scant brick-and-mortar experience, spent US$8bil (RM34.33bil) investing in a string of retailers including Suning Commerce Group Co to prove it can transform old-school shopping.
Tencent Holdings Ltd is extending a gaming empire built around social phenomenon WeChat, buying studios and creating content to evolve into an entertainment powerhouse. Those multibillion-dollar bets come under the microscope when both report earnings this week.
The aim is to sustain the sort of growth that’s driven their share multiples in excess of Facebook Inc, Apple Inc or Google parent Alphabet Inc – members of the vaunted FAANG quintet that also includes Amazon.com Inc and Netflix Inc. Alibaba and Tencent are projected to report June-quarter profit growth of 36% and 25% respectively.
While investors have so far given them the benefit of the doubt based on their track records, the fact that projections for share gains are rising faster than for actual earnings signals an impending market pullback, warns Neil Campling at Northern Trust Capital Markets.
After rising 73% in 2017, Alibaba shares trade at a multiple of 64 times earnings. Tencent is trading at 54 times profit after a 64% rise in its stock. That’s almost twice Alphabet’s 30 times and well ahead of Facebook’s 38. And Tencent’s shares this month surpassed projections on its stock price for the first time since 2015.
“The digital scale platform titans, such as Tencent, Alibaba and Facebook deserve premium ratings, but they will need to â€grow’ into such ratings rather than skyrocket higher,” Campling wrote in a report to clients. He highlighted the gulf between projections on prices versus earnings. “For those stocks where there is a significant gap between the two metrics we wonder if we may see some pressure on stock prices in the short term.”
Investors are beginning to hedge their bets. On Aug 11, Tencent’s shares fell 4.9% in Hong Kong – its biggest drop in 18 months. Alibaba was little changed in New York after sliding 3.6% on Aug 10.
The scale of Alibaba and Tencent’s acquisitions and deals – a total of US$55bil (RM236.03bil) announced or completed in 2016 and 2017 – had initially taken investors by surprise, given their years-long conservative streak of minority stakes. They’re motivated in part by the driving need to remain at the forefront: as Alphabet Chairman Eric Schmidt put it, competitors in the Internet industry may be just one click away.
Of the two, Alibaba’s moves seem more out-of-left-field. It began buying grocers from Lianhua to Sanjiang well before Amazon.com Inc agreed to buy Whole Foods Market Inc. Apart from acquisitions, China’s largest e-commerce player is also investing an unknown amount in initiatives rooted in physical retail, because co-founder Jack Ma believes pure e-commerce operators face “tremendous challenges” in future.
Take HeMa Supermarkets, the first of an envisioned nationwide chain that’s a grocery, restaurant and digital payments showcase rolled into one. Shoppers can dine in on fresh produce from lobster to crab, browse product recommendations by scanning bar codes throughout the store, then pay for everything through the Alipay app. Each store will eventually double as fulfillment centres, with staff picking up and shipping goods ordered online – the goal being to deliver in under half-an-hour to anywhere within a three-mile radius.
HeMa could expand to 22 stores by the end of 2018 from 13 as of June, generating 2.5bil yuan (RM1.61bil) in revenue, Barclays Plc analysts led by Gregory Zhao estimate. But supermarkets are just the tip of the iceberg – Alibaba wants to overhaul all retail, and not just for China either. The company has said so-called big-data analysis twinned with Internet-based cloud technology can fundamentally change the way brands manage inventory to meet real-time demand. Multiple layers of middlemen could be rendered redundant, Chief Executive Officer Daniel Zhang said in October.
“While core commerce is the engine for Alibaba’s near-term growth, new retail is expected to shape Alibaba’s business model in the long run,” Zhao said in a report.
Arch-foe Tencent is betting on initiatives closer to home, though no less ambitious. In the social media giant’s case, its mobile hit Honour of Kings and under-developed WeChat advertising business are fueling investors’ confidence.
Honour of Kings, an in-house adaptation of the better-known slugfest League of Legends, could generate US$3bil (RM12.87bil) of revenue this year, according to Serkan Toto, the founder of Tokyo-based consultancy Kantan Games Inc. Its runaway success has proven Tencent’s mainly desktop-based gaming business can make a successful transition to mobile and demonstrated the competence of its own team, after having led the US$8.6bil (RM36.90bil) acquisition of Clash of Clans studio Supercell Oy and, before that, Riot Games Inc.
But the Shenzhen-based company is also trying to reduce its reliance on games by making more money from WeChat via ads. Online advertising accounted for 13.9% of its revenue in the March quarter. Compare that with Facebook’s 98% reliance on ads in the same period.
Tencent reports its quarterly numbers on Aug 16, a day before Alibaba posts its results in the US. The investors who’ve rewarded the pair can then decide if their rich valuations are deserved, especially in a country where the government can change the business landscape with little notice.
“While gaming and advertising at Tencent are healthy, investors’ anticipation for earnings in cloud, payments and all the other new businesses can’t be substantiated by financial models,” said Li Muzhi, a Hong Kong-based analyst at Arete Research Services LLP. “Both companies face certain political risks.” — Bloomberg

Uber allows in-app tips for UK drivers

Ride-sharing company Uber is to allow its drivers in the UK to receive tips from passengers via its app.
Uber said the feature - first introduced in the US in June - would launch in the UK on Tuesday.
The change follows criticism that Uber was making it unnecessarily difficult for its drivers to improve their earnings.
It was described as "a cynical PR move" by a union representing British Uber drivers.
Uber is also launching a series of changes intended to allow drivers to better control their work flow.
These include "paid waiting time" - in which passengers will pay 20p every minute after the first two minutes if they keep their driver waiting.
Paid waiting time will go live in the UK on 22 August.
Driver feedback
Uber said that feedback from drivers had prompted it to make the changes.
"Riders who want to reward great service will now have the option to tip their driver through the app after each trip," the company said.
"This means riders don't need to carry cash if they want to tip their driver."
A spokesman confirmed to the BBC that 100% of tips received via the app would go to drivers, without Uber taking a cut.
Rival service Lyft in the US has offered in-app tipping since 2012 and taxi-booking app myTaxi - available in Germany, Austria and elsewhere - can also process tips.
Other new features for Uber drivers include:
Two-minute cancellations - riders will have to pay a fee if they cancel after two minutes, instead of five minutes, from being allocated a car
"No thanks" button - drivers can instantly reject a trip request instead of having to wait 10-20 seconds
Driver destinations - drivers who want to go to a specific area will be matched with passengers seeking a similar route
Trip request control - drivers can choose not to receive less lucrative UberX trip requests
"This is a cynical PR move ahead of Uber's appeal next month against last year's employment tribunal ruling in favour of drivers," said James Farrar, Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) United Private Hire Drivers (UPHD) chair.
"Despite its claims, Uber remains completely deaf to the most serious issue facing - excessively long hours earning on average between £5 and £6 per hour."
A spokesman for Uber disputed the calculation on earnings, however.
"Last year UK drivers made an average of £15 an hour in fares after our service fee," he said.
The changes were welcomed by the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed (IPSE).
"These benefits both establish and protect the freedom, control and autonomy that makes self-employment so attractive," said Andrew Chamberlain, deputy director of policy.
Uber drivers have long called for better tipping options.
In April - shortly before Uber offered in-app tipping in the US - the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission announced plans to require all cab companies that take payment via credit card to offer a tipping option.
A petition on the issue was signed by 11,000 Uber drivers.

Analysis: Rory Cellan-Jones, BBC technology correspondent
Executives at the ride-sharing firm like to talk about Uber 2.0 - an attempt to rebrand the company after a disastrous year that has seen the departure of its founder and allegations of a toxic culture.
Today's adjustments to the way the app works for drivers should be seen in light of that attempt to break with the past. Drivers at first seemed happy with the earnings offered by Uber and the flexibility of fixing their own hours.
But they have grown increasingly discontent, accusing the company of taking too high a commission and putting too many cars on the road.
Uber may actually be more focussed on last year's employment tribunal ruling in which judges described as "faintly ridiculous" its claim that drivers were a mosaic of small businesses operating without central control.
With an appeal against that ruling due next month, the firm may hope that moves to give drivers greater control will impress the tribunal.
'Sex crime' criticism
Separately, the Sunday Times has reported a Metropolitan Police officer has written to Uber, accusing it of failing to report sex attacks and other "serious crimes".
The newspaper said it had obtained a letter from Insp Neil Billany, head of the Met's taxi and private hire unit.
Insp Billany said he had "significant concern" over Uber's decision-making process and accused the company of reporting only less serious cases to avoid damaging its reputation.
The Sunday Times said at least six sexual assaults on passengers, two public order offences and an assault had gone unreported.
Uber's licence to operate in London is currently being reviewed.
Transport for London, which issues licences, said the situation was "totally unacceptable" and would affect its decision on the review.
In a response to the story on its blog, Uber described its view of its relationship with the Metropolitan Police.
"While we were surprised by this letter - as we don't feel it reflects the good working relationship we have with the police and the extensive support we provide - we would welcome further collaboration and to establish how we can do more to strengthen our existing processes," the firm said.

The web hosting company GoDaddy said on Aug 13 it had given The Daily Stormer 24 hours to move its domain to another provider after the extremist website posted an article denigrating the woman who was killed at a white nationalist rally in Virginia.

"We informed The Daily Stormer that they have 24 hours to move the domain to another provider, as they have violated our terms of service," GoDaddy posted on its official Twitter page.

The Daily Stormer post in question denigrated Heather Heyer, 32, who was fatally struck by a car allegedly driven by a man with white nationalist views, for her physical appearance and what it said were anti-white male views.

The Daily Stormer is a neo-Nazi, white supremacist website associated with the alt-right movement, which was spearheading the rally on Aug 12 in Charlottesville, Virginia which resulted in violence, including Heyer's death.

GoDaddy, founded in 1997 and based in Arizona, has some 6,000 employees worldwide.

Some smartphone users might dislike the punchy colours and higher-than-normal-contrast of Amoled displays but it’s hard to deny that it’s especially nice for watching movies and playing games.

The smartphone is powered by a mid-range Snapdragon 626 octa-core processor but has 4GB RAM which is good enough for handling resource-hungry apps and multitasking.

The phone had no problems running games such as Banner Saga, Layton’s Mystery Journey and Pokemon Go, and it didn’t overheat in the process. It has 64GB of internal storage which is more than enough memory for installing apps and storing photos and videos.

We also like the front fingerprint sensor which is not only fast and accurate but supports “gestures”. You can, for instance, swipe left to right to access recently opened apps or right to left to go back to the previous screen.

Upgrade it

As mentioned earlier, the Moto Z2 Play supports Moto Mods which are optional modular add-ons that clip on to the back of the phone.

There are a number of mods, including a JBL speaker, mini projector, battery pack and zoom lens by Hasselblad.

This means you will have to spend more money but Motorola has said that the Moto Mods will be supported by future models so it’s worthwhile if you plan to stick with the brand.

The Moto Z2 Play sports a 12-megapixel camera with a large f/1.7 aperture that allows it to shoot better in low-light conditions.

Sometimes the photos turned up a little overexposed or underexposed but it’s not too bad and can be easily fixed with an app.

Sadly it lacks OIS (optical image stabilisation) so you will need steady hands with this smartphone.

The Z2 Play comes with a 3,000mAh battery which is slightly smaller that its predecessor’s but Motorola has kept the operating system bare – it has not tweaked the OS or installed any apps that could impact battery life.

So even with the smaller battery it had no issues lasting an entire day.

Conclusion

What’s attractive about the Moto Z2 Play is that Motorola has kept everything minimal, from the design to the operating system, while offering enough features.

Also, it goes for RM1,999 which is not too bad for a mid-range smartphone.

Overall, the Moto Z2 Play is a fun device to get, especially if you are willing to pay for the Moto Mods which allow you to expand the features of the phone.

Pros: Long battery life; sleek design; fast and accurate fingerprint sensor; supports Moto Mods
Cons: Camera lacks optical image stabilisation; no Gallery app.

t's a matter of few weeks before LG takes the veil off from its brand new device(s) but that hasn't stopped the rumour mills from churning. According to a report on Android Police, the company might launch the all-new LG V30 Plus along the expected V30 at the pre-IFA 2017 event in Berlin, Germany.
While the LG V30 has already been up for discussion for quite a while now, the LG V30 Plus is expected to come with more features and advantages. As reported by ET News (Korea), the devices will have some differences, like the LG V30 will come with 64GB of internal storage as opposed to LG V30 Plus' 128GB internal storage. Either of the devices might also be missing the Hi-Fi audio or wireless charging. It's possible that both devices might have one these features each or just one device might be getting both the features.

China's e-commerce giant Alibaba has signed an agreement with its home city government in Zhejiang province to use the company's technology to create an online system for house rentals.
The system will cover apartments put up for rent from all sources -- the government, individuals, real estate developers and agents, according to the agreement signed earlier this week.
People seeking rental housing in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang province, will be able to use the application and website created by Alibaba for every stage in the process, from searching for apartments to signing contracts and payment, state-run Xinhua news agency reported today.
Google's just rewarded $10,000 to a high school student, read why
"Information on apartments, user reviews, and credibility ratings of owners, renters and agents will all be shared," said Han Junqing, director of Hangzhou Real Estate Registration Center.
The smart house renting system, as it is called, will be supported by Alibaba's big data, online payment technology, and commerce credit system and can prevent fraudulent deals, sources with the government and Alibaba said.
China's housing rental market in major cities has been dominated by real estate agents, and fraud and disputes are not unusual.
Shares of Snapchat parent Snap sank after it reported a hefty quarterly loss
Though some big real estate companies already have apps, the information is not shared with others.
Apartment seekers have to repeatedly compare offers from different apps, and these companies lack a mature credit system comparable to Zhima Credit from Alibaba subsidiary Ant Financial.
The Chinese government is prioritising the development of its rental market to rein in runaway home prices in the country's big cities.
Hangzhou is among the first 12 cities chosen by the central government to take bold reforms to boost the rental market.

Apple iOS users will now be receiving an alert from Google's Gmail whenever a suspicious link shows up on the email app. The alert from Gmail will come in form of a box, letting iOS users know how it is leading to an untrusted website. Users can, however, still choose to go ahead and open the link
"Going forward, when you click on a suspicious link in a Gmail message on your iPhone or iPad, we'll show the warning below. We recommend that you use caution before proceeding, because the link is likely unsafe. Only proceed if you're confident there's no risk," says the G Suit blog post.

Furthermore, if a user clicks on a link that Google thinks is dangerous, it will show a web page saying "The site you are trying to open has been identified as a forgery designed to trick you into disclosing financial, personal or other sensitive information." Users will again be given the option to go ahead or even report an incorrect warning.
For those unaware, Google already brought these features to Android earlier this year.
Google this year has rolled out couple of other features for Gmail in order to curb phishing attacks.
Back in May, Gmail users faced a gigantic phishing attack. The scam looked like a regular mail alert with the subject "ABC [Name of the person] has shared a document on Google Docs with you." The mail included a Google Doc link, which appeared legitimate but was actually not. This gave hackers access to the user's Gmail account information.
In February, Google also announced that it won't let Gmail users send '.js' files as attachments. The search giant said that '.js' files were increasingly being used to spread malware. The service already restricts certain file attachments (e.g. .exe, .msc, and .bat) for security reasons.

Google has cancelled an all-staff meeting to discuss a controversial memo about diversity written by former engineer James Damore.
It is reported that some staff members were concerned about being singled out online if they were identified while they spoke out during the meeting.
The firm said it would "find a better way" to help employees discuss the issues raised by the memo.
Mr Damore was fired for breaking Google's code of conduct.
He had suggested in his internal note that there were fewer women in tech and leadership positions because of biological differences.

According to Google's most recent diversity figures, 80% of its tech workforce and 75% of its leaders are men.
"We need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism," Mr Damore wrote in his note, which was widely criticised.
Was Google wrong to fire memo author?
Does Silicon Valley have a sexism problem?
Mr Damore said he had been sent messages of support from some staff at the tech giant and he also received a job offer from Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who tweeted "censorship is for losers".
Google's new vice-president Danielle Brown said that Mr Damore's view "advanced incorrect assumptions about gender".
"We are unequivocal in our belief that diversity and inclusion are critical to our success as a company, and we'll continue to stand for that and be committed to it for the long haul," she wrote in a statement published by Motherboard.
Analysis: Zoe Kleinman, technology reporter
The ongoing lack of diversity in the entire tech sector is an issue that has grown an even bigger head of steam in recent months, with a steady stream of stories about big firms and big names being held to account.
Women who work in the industry are increasingly choosing to speak out about their experiences in this male-dominated domain, and to challenge the statistics which demonstrate that they remain a minority, despite high-profile campaigns and initiatives aimed at redressing the balance.
James Damore's suggestion that it is because they are biologically less suited to it has caused considerable anger, particularly among those who have forged successful Stem (science, technology, engineering and maths) careers.
Google has been very clear that Mr Damore did not speak on its behalf but it has also faced criticism for firing him, with critics suggesting that the action went against the firm's principle of free speech.

People with challenges will now be able to access their Windows 10 PCwith the help of an Eye Tracker. Microsoft has recently announced the ‘Eye Control’ feature at the company’s hackathon. The feature is specifically designed for the people with challenges to help them operate their Windows 10 PC with an on-screen keyboard and mouse.

The feature is specifically designed for Windows 10 PC. In the first hackathon of Microsoft, the company announced this wonderful feature named Eye Control which can let the disable users to access the PC with their eyes control.
However, the feature also requires a compatible eye tracker to work. According to Dona Sarkar, a software engineer at Microsoft mentioned in her blog that the users will need a compatible eye tracker to use this newly launched feature of Windows 10. Sarkar also recommended the ‘Tobii Eye Tracker 4C’ to use this feature.
To use it, the users first need to turn on the Eye Control feature on the PC which then brings a Launchpad on the screen allowing users to get an access to the PC. When the Launchpad appears on the screen, the users have to stare at the screen until the feature activates.

Once activated, the Eye Control feature lets users use the mouse from the Launchpad. You just need to position your eyes where you want to the cursor to be. Similarly, they can select the on-screen keyboard from the Launchpad and just stare at the characters they want to type.
The company, however, states that this new feature might not work well in the sunlight and is still working to fix this issue. Also, it might not work when the users move the PC to a different lighting condition. Once moved, the tool might need a re-calibration. The company suggests restarting the tool in such scenario.
The One Week Hackathon is focused on company’s mission of empowering the users worldwide. Blue-screen errors can be very difficult to handle since, especially if the system crashes and does not boot afterward. Since you won’t be able to log on to the system and no mode including Safe Mode would work, you wouldn’t be able to troubleshoot. One could try to boot into Advanced Startup Options and troubleshoot or repair the OS or as a last step, re-install the operating system using an external recovery media. One such error that could create such problems is:
The digital signature for the file couldn’t be verified, File: \Windows\system32\winload.exe, Error code: 0xc0000428

Users who get this error would be unable to boot their system or perform any task another task. This issue may or may not be with the hardware. But in the latter case, the resolution would be as follows:
In Windows 7 the command prompt can be started without booting into the operating system as follows:
Insert the recovery media into the system and hit F12 while rebooting or press the assist button, if your system has that option.
In the boot options screen, click on the option Troubleshoot.
In the Troubleshoot menu, select the option Advanced Options.
In the Advanced options menu, select Command Prompt.  This opens the command prompt.
Windows 10 or Windows 8.1 users can access the Command Prompt easily via Advanced Startup Options.

Once you have access to the Command Prompt, do the following.
1] Perform CHKDSK
CHKDSK helps identify problems with sectors on the disk, and if possible, fix them. Use the following CHKDSK commands on Windows and restart the system:
chkdsk /r
2] Rebuild Boot Manager
After opening the Command Prompt, use the following commands one by one and press Enter:
C:

cd boot

attrib bcd -s -h -r

bootrec /rebuildbcd
The last command rebuilds the Boot Manager.
It has also been suggested to use the following commands if needed:
bootrec  /fixMBR

bootrec  /fixBoot
These commands repair the Master Boot Record.
After that, you could consider performing a Startup Repair on the system.
3] Temporarily disable Driver Signature Enforcement
Since the issue is with the Driver Signature, we could disable it temporarily and isolate the cause. The steps would be as follows for Windows 7:
In the recovery or boot options screen, click on the option Troubleshoot.
In the Troubleshoot menu, select the option Advanced Options.
Click on Startup Settings.
Click on the option Disable Driver Signature Enforcement.
Windows 10 or Windows 8.1 users can access the Command Prompt easily via Advanced Startup Options.

If this works, and the system reboots successfully, Run DISM to repair your system image.
While this troubleshooting could help many, it is not a fool proof fix. Users who are technical could try the troubleshooting mentioned for a similar issue in the guide at Technet. Though it would need a deep understanding of Windows, the experts who suggested the troubleshooting claim it would help.
If everything fails, we could assume the issue might be with the hardware. Probably, because of dust in some internal components.
